Carlton History

For the visitor

There are information boards in Little Lane, off Shackerstone Walk at the western end of the village, and next to the Gate Hangs Well public house at the eastern end.

Saint Andrew’s Church marks the historic core of Carlton. There has been a church here since 1220, though the present building dates from 1764 when the church was re-built after a fire. The building of 1764 was altered and gothicised in 1867, when the windows were altered and the saddleback top was added to the tower.

The Stone House to the west of the church is built of Carlton Stone, as is the old core of Manor House Farm across the road. Carlton Stone was once quarried to the north-west of the village, and can be seen in many buildings round about.

At the western end of the village, the former village school was built in the middle of the village green in 1847, with the former Rectory and its 10 acres of Glebe Land further west. The Carlton Charity Lands, established in 1317 lie near the Battlefield Line railway and yield an income which is used to provide grants to young residents at the start of their careers.

The Bosworth to Measham turnpike ran though the eastern end of the village, and the toll gate is recalled by The Gate Hangs Well public house. Mill House, on Nailstone Road is a reminder that a post mill once stood in fields to the east.
