Walking
The local network of public rights of way provides links to neighbouring settlements and a wide range of circular walks in attractive countryside. The ongoing Miles without Stiles programme has improved access by replacing stiles by kissing gates, and all footpaths are fully waymarked and free from obstructions.
The nearby Ashby Canal towpath also provides stile-free walking, and the Leicestershire Round circular route passes through the western end of the village.
There are information boards showing local public rights of way in Little Lane off Shackerstone Walk at the western end of the village, and next to The Gate Hangs Well public house at the eastern end.
Maps and guides to local circular walks can be found in the Carlton Local Walks pack 2014 and a Parish Walks and Rides leaflet 2006.
Leicestershire County Council produces a wide range of Local Walks Packs for other parts of the County.
Carlton Footpath Group
The Carlton Footpath Group monitors the condition of all public rights of way in Carlton, and carries out maintenance work. The CFG is working closely with the County Council, Carlton Parish Council, local parish councils and landowners on the replacement of stiles with kissing gates, so as to improve access to the countryside.
