NewsMinorca Opencast mine (13-03-18)
Many parishioners will have watched the development and restoration of the Minorca open cast coal mine, between Swepstone and Measham, with interest. The site is crossed by the Gilwiskaw Brook and another small watercourse, which are part of the Rover Mease Special Area of Conservation. Ensuring that this watercourse was not adversely affected by the mining operations was a major concern for British Coal and its consultants, who were being monitored by Natural England and the Environment Agency. An article in the current issue of Geoscientist by Laren Ballarini, Associate Director of Wardell Armstrong LLP, describes how the site was monitored and the effects on the local ground and surface waters during the mining operation.
